Hi. My name is Susan. I was court mandated to come to ACW and I was not happy about that or about anything else for that matter. All my problems were everyone else’s fault. It wasn’t my fault I couldn’t keep a job or stop stealing because I was doing meth and never knew what day or time it was. I lost everything and was blaming everyone instead of the one who caused my problems: me. During my time at ACW, I began to realize that my problems were of my own making. The staff, groups, and program structure helped me to gain tools to look at the truth, examine my problems and develop positive solutions to create a productive life for myself when I leave. ACW is the place to come to for help.

Out-Participant

Hello, I’m Yolanda. I attend ACW’s Out-Participant Program. I needed to come to a program because I was having trouble hiding my alcohol use from my family and staying sober on my job. I needed help to not lose my job that I worked so hard for and my family that I love. The staff is great: they have already heard every excuse in the book so I am not able to get away with anything which at first I didn’t like but now I know that this has kept me from the bottle. I also like attending the groups and hearing how other women are struggling with the same issues I am. I don’t know where I would be now if I hadn’t come to ACW.

Prevention

Hi. My name is Jasmine. I want to tell you that ACW prevention services changed my life. Seriously. When I moved to this country from El Salvador I was 12 and I hardly knew English. A year later my mom’s new boyfriend raped me. My mommy didn’t believe me and I really didn’t know how to deal with this. I told my friend who told Lilly, ACW Prevention Coordinator who was giving afterschool prevention workshops at my school. Lilly helped me and my mommy be able to talk to each other. Lilly also invited me to participate in Girls Chat, a twice a week teen program at ACW. I loved it and ACW. I then participated in other prevention programs including the Mural project. I really enjoyed learning about painting and having the wall be transformed into something that others will look at for years to come. I participated in ACW prevention programs for 3 years. If it hadn’t been for ACW I would have run away from home, never spoke to my mommy again, and dropped out of school. Oh…and now I am getting straight A’s in high school, my English is great, I have a good relationship with my mommy and I volunteer at the Los Angeles Zoo. I like animals.

Established in 1974 to address the special needs of women affected by alcohol and other drug abuse, ACW is now licensed and certified by the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Program to provide a variety of residential and outpatient rehabilitation programs supported by Medi-Cal, CAL-Works, Proposition 36 funds, City of Los Angeles Community Development Department, General Relief (GR), and the Los Angeles County Alcohol and Drug Program Administration.
